The T seeks new ideas on future of transit at public meetings April 22

*The T will brief Fort Worth City Council May 18 on a new 25-year strategic plan to enhance transit

FORT WORTH (April 14, 2010) – The T announced at its board of directors meeting today that it will hold public meetings for citizens to comment on its plan to improve and expand public transportation in the Greater Fort Worth area.

The public meetings will be at noon and at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 at the Intermodal Transportation Center in downtown Fort Worth (MAPSCO 77A).

Citizens’ ideas will help The T develop a new 25-year strategic plan with near and long-term goals for bus, train and other services to enhance public transportation.

The T is scheduled to present the first draft of its vision for a new strategic plan to the Fort Worth City Council at its meeting on May 18.

Citizens also may state their transit preferences by completing a survey on The T’s website at www.the-t.com, or by calling The T’s Comment Line at 817-215-8669. The website survey also explains the background and purpose of The T’s strategic plan.

The T’s current 25-year strategic plan that was developed in 2005 reflected public requests to make The T’s public transit more rapid, to provide more rail, and to become more regional.

“The strategic plan’s vision will be our guide to identify and prioritize the projects that are best-suited, within The T’s resources and funding, to help make public transportation more accessible and convenient in Fort Worth and throughout Tarrant County and the region,” said Dick Ruddell, president of The T.

Projects begun or accomplished since The T’s 2005 strategic plan was adopted include: new commuter rail from SW Fort Worth to DFW Airport; bus rapid transit system on East Lancaster; additional bus routes to improve geographic coverage; transit signal priority along East Lancaster for more timely bus travel; cameras on all buses and at all facilities; express commuter service from Arlington; new passenger shelters in neighborhoods and downtown; Trinity Railway Express improvements to speed train travel; continuous Molly the Trolley service downtown; joint study with Fort Worth of modern streetcar; and customer service initiative for all employees.
