Ride The T for a Can on 7-26 to beef up Food Bank summer provisions
*Annual bus donation moves from Thanksgiving to summer when food stock is diminished
FORT WORTH (July 9, 2007) Riding the bus in Fort Worth and Richland Hills will cost only a can of food on Thursday, July 26, when the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T) will host its annual “Ride for a Can Day” to benefit the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
The T moved its Food Bank donation drive from the Thanksgiving period to July at the request of the Food Bank, which said it traditionally does not receive as many donations during the summer.
One can of food may be redeemed for a one-way bus fare. Two canned goods will earn a free local “Day Pass” which can be used for unlimited local rides that day.
Cans may be redeemed on any T regular route bus, express bus or trolley or at one of two T facilities: the Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) customer service counter at Jones & 9th Street or at The T administrative offices at 1600 E. Lancaster Ave. The Ride for a Can promotion is not valid for Mobility Impaired Services (MITS) or Trinity Railway Express (TRE) service. A local Day Pass may be used on the TRE within Tarrant County.
“People think of the needy during the holiday period, but it’s easy to forget during the more carefree days of summer that the hunger issue is with us 365-days a year,” said Bo Soderbergh, executive director of Tarrant Area Food Bank. “At a time when donations typically fall off, our needs in summer can become even greater, especially with children unable to receive the free and reduced lunches available through schools,” Soderbergh said.
“The T believes it’s important to offer a promotion of free fares in exchange for canned goods that will help the Food Bank restock its shelves to meet the needs of the hungry in our community,” said Dick Ruddell, president and executive director of The T.
